Sony digital SLR cameras at Photokina 2008 : If we speak of a manufacturer that is growing fast and conquering a large market share with a lot of marketing force, it has to be Sony playing the main role. In 2006 Sony launched its first DSLR under the own brand name; the Sony Alpha 100. One year later, the Sony Alpha 700 arrived, a camera for the middle segment. 2008 was a great break-through with no less than three new DSLR models, notably the A200, A300 and A350. During the PMA, at the beginning of 2008, Sony stirred up the fire by unveiling some information about the CMOS image sensor that was going to be used. The message was clear; with 24.6 Megapixels on a full frame sensor, 2008 should also be the year for Sony to launch a DSLR in the high end segment. And thus, the Sony DSLR-A900 was born.

It was rather unusual that there was hardly any news in the field of the Cyber-shot compact camera. Whereas we used to have a non-stop workflow from large series of new cameras (January 2008 alone was good for 13 new models), the Photokina 2008 only focussed on the Alpha DSLR. The Sony Alpha 900, a 24.6 megapixels full frame sensor, stood in the spotlight which was quite obvious. A broad audience visited the Sony booth and everybody was determined to stay until he or she had held the DSLR-A900 in his or her hands, of course with the additional Zeiss lens mounted on the camera.

The Alpha assortment will have been completed once the Sony Alpha 900 is available, which is expected to be October/November 2008. And this alone is an impressive achievement. Sony launched a complete line-up from an entry-level DSLR to a high resolution DSLR for the advanced photographer at an incredible speed. Sony forced a price breakthrough with the Alpha 900 body and soon after, the other brands followed Sony in this, for example Canon with the EOS 5D Mark II. The target group for this A900 is the photographer willing to invest in Zeiss lenses. All in all, this kind of a combination can really increase its value. It is for a reason that the professional photographer is not mentioned as target group, instead it is the so-called pro-consumer target group. It is very well possible that the Sony Alpha 900 will appeal to a whole new group of photographers.
